Description
Parents in high-conflict separations and divorces are often stuck in all-or-nothing thinking, unmanaged emotions, extreme behavior and a preoccupation with blaming each other (and their professionals). Yet most can be re-directed to learn new skills that are simple, with lots of repetition and positive reinforcement by all professionals. Using these skills, they can focus on better communication with their co-parent and their children. They can also become more effective in developing their own parenting plans and/or following court orders.
Bill Eddy, LCSW, Esq., co-founder of the High Conflict Institute, will focus on ways to work with individual clients by any professional, starting with foundational information on understanding what drives high conflict behaviors, the necessary paradigm shift for increasing your effectiveness, and identifying your own conflict style, which can impact the success of handling high conflict cases.
Following foundational elements, Bill will focus on skills and some of the different ways that parents think in high-conflict situations and key things to avoid in working with them, including the 4 Fuhgedaboudits. A simple method will be presented for recognizing potential high-conflict patterns of behavior. Then, a method, the CARS Method® for professionals to use for calming them and building cooperation, will be presented.
Bill will also discuss the dynamics of bullies and how to spot them and stop them, based on his 2024 book, Our New World of Adult Bullies: How to Spot Them – How to Stop Them.
Key skills will be presented which can be used with other professionals, with clients, and can also be taught to parents to assist them in communicating and making decisions: EAR Statements for verbal interactions; using BIFF Response® method for written communications (based on Bill’s recent book, BIFF for Lawyers and BIFF for Co-Parent Communication), will be presented with examples and a brief practice exercise. Then a method of Making Proposals in three steps will be presented, which helps clients focus on problem-solving and away from emotional engagement. Finally, a method for calming their own emotions with Encouraging Statements will be taught.
He will also discuss tips for mediating high conflict disputes, teaching skills to clients and children, and dealing with high-conflict opposing counsel or other professionals.
