A presentation and panel discussion by Maureen Brady, Erin Bullett, Kevin Chafin, Danielle Dodd, Jill Katz and Sarah Pleban discussing the current state of practitioners in Family Court and therapeutic practices being surreptitiously recorded by patients, clients or parties in the course of their work, what ethical and practical issues arise from those recordings, and how practitioners can proactively address them and respond after discovering they have been recorded.

About the Presenters

Maureen Brady, JD - Maureen Brady is a managing member and a founder of McShane & Brady, LLC.  In addition to her thriving personal injury practice, Maureen has become one of the leading attorneys in the nation to handle wrongful medical disclosures and HIPAA violations. She has won numerous cases against both individuals and corporations who have improperly disclosed private health information. Maureen has received multiple awards from her fellow attorneys for her work and is often times called upon to lecture about HIPAA law.

Erin Bullett, PhD - Erin Bullett, PhD, is an Licensed Clinical Psychologist, Associate Clinical Professor, and Executive Director of the Psychological Services Clinic at the University of Missouri, the primary training site for doctoral students in clinical psychology. In this role, she oversees clinic operations, provides both classroom and clinical instruction, and delivers evidence-based care to clients. Dr. Bullett teaches the Ethical and Professional Issues II course and serves as Chair of the Clinic Executive Committee. Prior to her current role, she was a staff psychologist at the MU Student Health Center from 2014 to 2019.

Kevin Chafin, LPC - Kevin Chafin is a Licensed Professional Counselor and mediator in private practice. Coparenting counseling is a large part of Kevin’s practice, often with high conflict families. He is a presenter on topics related to mediation as well as court involved counseling with parents and children. Kevin lives and practices in Kansas City, Missouri. He is a past president of the board of the Missouri Chapter of the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts (moafcc.org).

Danielle Dodd, JD - Danielle Dodd is the director of the MU Child and Family Justice Clinic. Prior to joining the Mizzou Law faculty full time, she was legal counsel for the Department of Social Services (DSS). As legal counsel for DSS, she advised Children’s Division and Missouri HealthNet. This included litigating termination of parental rights, adult guardianships, and opposing removal-of-name-requests under the Child Abuse and Neglect Registry. Along with this, she taught Legal Research and Writing as an adjunct faculty member. While in law school, Professor Dodd won the Nelson Mandela National Negotiation Competition and received the Roscoe Anderson Award for Excellence in Advocacy. Upon graduation she became a member of the Order of Barristers. From 2018–2022 Professor Dodd worked at True North of Columbia, Columbia’s local domestic and sexual violence agency.

Jill M. Katz, JD, LPC - Jill Katz is a Licensed Professional Counselor, a Mediator, and an Attorney in Missouri. For over 30 years as a family law attorney, Jill was a tireless advocate for children and guided parents through relationship transitions. From families changing through divorce, separations, or adoptions, she sought ways to empower them to move forward in their new family dynamic. Becoming a LPC has allowed her to focus on what she was most passionate about as an attorney: supporting people and giving them the tools to thrive as parents regardless of circumstances. She works with individuals, couples, and families with a focus on co-parenting, relationship changes, and custody issues– overall helping families redefine their relationships for the future.  Outside of her work as a therapist, Jill mentors young and aspiring family law attorneys and mental health professionals. She enjoys sewing, making fresh pasta, and visiting her daughters and their families in St. Louis and Newcastle, Australia.

 Sarah S. Pleban, JD - Sarah Pleban graduated from St. Louis University School of Law.  She was Chief Trial Attorney for the St. Louis County Public Defender Office.  Since going into private practice Ms. Pleban has devoted most of her practice to guardian ad item work in custody cases and in juvenile court.  She has been a speaker for the Missouri Bar, Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis, St. Louis County Bar Association, and the Association of Family and Conciliatory Courts.
