The Missouri Chapter of the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts (MO-AFCC)
MO-AFCC Board Presents

The “Shalls” and “Shoulds”:
What the New Model Standards for Family and Divorce Mediation tell us about Mediators, Mediation and other Court-Connected Processes

Friday, September 26, 2025, 12:00 p.m. - 1:30 p.m.
via Zoom Webinar

With Presenters: Simone Haberstock, JD, LLM; and Kevin Chafin, LPC

About the Training

In July 2025, AFCC and the American Bar Association Family Section Task Force published their Revision of Model Standards for Family and Divorce Mediation.

As Professor Donna Erez-Navot, Reporter for AFCC and ABA Family Section Task Force, writes, the Model Standards "serve as the ethical cornerstone for mediation in family and divorce matters. Over the past twenty-five years, the practice of family and divorce mediation has become increasingly widespread, structured, and embedded within legal and institutional systems. These updated Model Standards aim to promote public confidence in a continually evolving profession while offering clear and consistent guidance to participants, professionals, contracting agencies, and courts."

This webinar training, offered by Simone Haberstock, JD, LLM, and Kevin Chafin, LPC, will present these revisions and discuss their implications on the practice of family and divorce mediation in Missouri.

Learning Objectives

This training will:
  • Define the scope of mediation and the role of mediator as defined by the new Model Standards.
  • Discuss how requirements and best practices detailed in the new standards apply in how mediators work with parties, attorneys, guardians ad litem, and minor children, both broadly and in complex matters.
  • Identify the standards that differentiate and exclude other court-connected processes like parenting coordination, co-parenting counseling, family therapy and settlement conferences from the mediation process.
